5. Adult-to-child ratios and group size.
6. Communication practices — daily reports, photos, incident reporting, responsiveness.
7. Actual classroom/home environment — cleanliness, outdoor access, naps, meals and safety.
8. Educational approach — Montessori, play-based, academic/pre-K, bilingual, etc.
9. References from current parents, not just online reviews.

California distinguishes between licensed child-care centers and licensed family child-care homes; the latter operate in the provider's home and generally offer a smaller setting.
