  A long-running family-owned Texas business dating to 1983. Historical industry material identifies it as specializing in PDC repair and supplying bits for oil & gas, water well, HDD, geothermal, mining and construction. Its former owner Raymond Mills also developed the Life Force PDC line.
  Best fit: water-well/HDD and contractors who value an established independent repair-and-bit operation.
• DB Bits LLC — Conroe
  More repair/refurbishment-oriented than the manufacturers above. It specializes in PDC repair, including cutter replacement, blade restoration, hardfacing, gauge/profile correction and QC. It can make sense when the contractor's economics depend heavily on getting additional footage from existing PDC inventory.
• Alvarado Bit Service — Alvarado
  A particularly interesting family-owned option for water-well drilling. The company traces its Texas roots to 1976, says it produces and maintains products in-house, and offers its own Asteroid PDC line as well as PDC repair and custom retipping.
  Best fit: water-well rather than conventional shale oilfield drilling.

One important distinction

I would not put Ulterra in the “independent/family-owned” bucket, even though it is probably one of the most established Texas-based PDC manufacturers contractors encounter. Ulterra is headquartered in Fort Worth and has extensive Texas field infrastructure, and it describes itself as a major North American PDC manufacturer. If your criterion is simply “Texas-based manufacturer that drilling contractors use extensively,” it belongs in the broader comparison; if your criterion is specifically family-owned/independent, I'd leave it out.

If you're sourcing for oilfield drilling

For a contractor comparing independent Texas PDC suppliers for actual oil & gas work, I'd investigate Revolution, Klear, and Drill Master first, then look at Blast Hole and Mills depending on the application. The first three have the clearest evidence of purpose-built oilfield PDC manufacturing rather than primarily water-well/HDD work.
